Forbes has a rich colourful history, with charming heritage buildings - many set around Victoria Square. The legendary bushranger Ben Hall is buried in the Forbes General Cemetery. Lake Forbes which is located on the edge of the Newel Highway is a great picnic spot which is used by locals and travellers. There is a walking track around the shores of the lake which is also very popular. Forbes has a vibrant pastoral, dairying, agricultural and orchard industries. Sandhills Winery with its antique copper distillery, was established in 1920 by Lucien Bouchier, a French wine maker and is located two kilometers along the Orange Road. The Historical Museum is also worth a visit, located in Cross Street. The building housing the museum was originally a music hall. The Forbes heritage trail is a major attraction.
