The town is situated on the most northern point of the Danube, nestling among gently rolling hills, where grapes have been grown since the Roman times. The town began as a Celtic settlement, then becaume the Roman fort Casta Regina and later the capital of Bavaria and seat of the Reichtag until 1806. Regensburg, a city fortunate enough never to have been destroyed.
