When Morgans opened on Madison Avenue and 37th Street in 1983, Andree Putnam revolutionized the role of design in the New York hotel industry with a look that was modern and chic but at the same time unpretentious. The Morgans experience was new-- balancing a casual ambience with an emphasis on exceptional service in the tradition of the world*s great hotels. In August 2008, Ms. Putman has reimaged Morgans' 113 guestrooms, duplex penthouse, and classic lobby. Her new design retains the freshness of her original monochromatic black and white palette but reinterprets it with rich gradations of white, gray and black tones. This palette is repeated in the details of each guest room from grey slip-covered headboards to original black and white photographs of the famous contemporary photographer, the late Robert Mapplethorpe. Signature Morgans's design elements such as guestroom alcoves overlooking city views have been retained. New design additions include an art installation, commissioned by Ms. Putman, created by the French design collective Trafik, and installed on the lobby ceiling behind a stretched white barisol canvas. Armchairs and foldable lacquered tables by the 1930's designer Jean-Michel Frank, a favorite of Ms. Putman's, accent the lobby, while the elevator and corridors offer another moment of quiet ambience with soft lighting elements that give a rhythm to the space, a move that the designer describes as being "like the streetlights in a Scorsese movie." Morgans has the Living Room - an elegant private space with the feel of a cozy library. The Living Room is the ideal place to relax, watch a movie, read a book, chat with a friend, or work on a computer. Complimentary tea, coffee and light fare are offered throughout the day. The original Asia de Cuba retains its playful, yet dramatic design by Philippe Starck. Serving a refined blend of Asian and Latin cuisine, the restaurant is under the direction of Jeffrey Chodorow, whose Asia de Cuba outposts in Mondrian Los Angeles, Mondrian Scottsdale, St Martins Lane in London and San Francisco's Clift have met with critical and customer acclaim. This quite extraordinary space is an elegant, exciting mix of influences-a melding of simplicity and sophistication, comfort and invention. Morgans provides modern comforts that create a perfect haven for guests -a true home-away-from-home with a twist: King and Queen-sized beds, 24-hour Room Service and Concierge, flat-screen televisions with full-cable access including premium channels, Movies On Demand, refrigerators with in-room refreshments and fresh flowers.
