The hotel building was originally part of the 19th century Estate owned John Henry Challis (1806-1880), which along with the avenue, took his name. An Englishman and self-made philanthropist, John Henry Challis was a major benefactor of the expansion of Sydney University?s Arts, Sciences and Medicine faculties.
