Hotel Shakespeare House Guest House

Main Street, Grendon Underwood HP18 0ST , Buckinghamshire (United Kingdom)

Hotel description

With great reviews from national newspapers, this Gold Award winning, 5-star Guest Accommodation (from Quality in Tourism for Visit Britain) is said to have been visited by Shakespeare.

In the village of Grendon Underwood, 20 minutes from Oxford, Shakespeare House is a beautifully restored Grade II Listed property that dates back over 500 years. Once a coaching inn, the building is part Elizabethan and part Tudor.

Today it has luxury rooms, a welcoming drawing room with large fireplace and TV, and an elegant dining room with log fire. The house also has front and rear gardens.

Shakespeare House was voted one of the top 50 romantic places to stay in the UK by The Sunday Telegraph newspaper (December 2008).

The Guardian newspaper said "great for solo travellers and dinner's such fun", while The Observer liked the "plush furnishings and super-swish bathrooms". Shakespeare House was also praised by Conde Nast Traveller Magazine.

Your hosts, Nick Hunter and Roy Elsbury, will be delighted to welcome you into their historic home and offer you a unique insight into the past of this fascinating residence.

Named after William Shakespeare, tradition tells that the famous playwright stayed here on several occasions when travelling between Stratford-upon-Avon and London. It is also said that he may have gained inspiration during one of his stays here for 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.

During your stay you can stroll through the beautifully restored parterre garden to the rear of the property. Further to the rear is a large lawn bordered to the west by tall willows surrounding an ornamental pond. Set back from the village road, the house also enjoys a front garden, well stocked with mature trees and shrubs.

The house is arranged over 3 floors. As a 500-year old house, special facilities cannot be provided for anyone with impaired mobility, but please feel free to ask for any assistance you may need.

The Wi-Fi internet access is password protected; just ask a member of staff and they will give you the password so that you can surf for free.

All rooms have own bath or shower with body jets, some even have both! Some also feature a spa bath. All of the comfortable beds are dressed in luxurious linen.

The guesthouse boasts 5-stars a Gold Award for both its accommodation and meals, each of which are freshly prepared using locally sourced ingredients.
