Traverse City is in a community that has a long maritime history. The name, in fact, came from the French-Canadian traders who referred to the 8- km crossing at the mouth of the bay as "La Grande Traverse". Today, visitors to Traverse City love the sand and the crystal- clear, aqua- colored lakes.
